A Fresh 48 is a very exciting, and a little bit scary, experience for a photographer and a family. The lighting and decor in a maternity hospital room isn't designed with photography in mind. But the magic of the connections when a family first meets its newest member, and the cuteness of these newborns from those tiny toes and wrinkly knees to their big, dramatic yawns, makes it totally worth it. I aim for a "documentary" approach, meaning to shoot things as they really are without manipulating too much, so the photos match the real memories of those moments (which, especially after labor and a few sleepless nights, can be a bit fuzzy!). I was honored to be invited into Vanessa and Mason's room after Mason was born, starting with watching him meeting his big brother Owen for the first time! Here are some of my favorites from the shoot.
